Welcome to the newest section of our website, Access to Care!

At AboutFace, we understand that one of the most daunting tasks facing adults and parents of children with facial differences is finding the necessary resources to secure the care and treatment they need.  In Canada, we are very fortunate to have most of the medical expenses associated with congenital and acquired differences covered through the Provincial Health Plans and other Ministries of Health. However, this is not the case for dental care and other treatments. In fact, there is a vast inequality in treatment options, access and funding support province by province making the task more complicated.

In 2010, AboutFace took part in an environmental scan of Canadian Cleft Lip/Palate Dental Bursary Programs, conductied for the Office of the Chief Dental Officer by Dr. Constantine Batsos (August, 2010). This report clearly highlights the discrepancies in the provincial programs, making access to dental care for this unique population unpredictable and inconsistent. AboutFace is working to increase and improve access to care in Canada for individuals with facial differences. We are working with partners and other associations to change and improve this disparity. Improving access to information is our starting point. In this section, you will find a listing of all the craniofacial clinics, information on the funding bursaries and dental programs offered in each province, a listing of all provincial Health Ministers, as well as detailed resources pages dedicated to explaining the various Syndromes and Conditions. As we continue developing this section, we will post other funding sources and ways to help you secure support for dental and other treatment as well as other ancillary expenses such as travel, etc.

Access to Care is a new feature that will aim to consolidate information in one central location for ease of use and reference. Therefore, this section will be updated on a regular basis to ensure that the recent information is always available.  If you have information that would be helpful to others in regards to securing funding or other special treatment options, please send it to AboutFace at anna@aboutface.ca or call us at 1-800-665-3223 x21.

All further inquiries or requests for information can be sent to: info@aboutface.ca
