AboutFace National Facial Differences Awareness Month

September is National Facial Differences Awareness Month – a first for AboutFace. Across Canada, AboutFace families, friends, volunteers and healthcare clinics will be asked to do what they can to raise awareness about individuals with Facial Differences.  As one client states, “A facial difference is what I have, it’s not who I am.”

Every year in Canada, 10,000 babies are born with a facial difference and an additional 50,000 individuals will acquire a facial difference as a result of trauma or a health related issue.

This year the focus of our National Facial Differences Awareness Month is on cleft lip and palete – just one of many issues that results in a facial difference.

In addition to raising awareness and acceptance, AboutFace is raising funds to support the programs and services available to children and adults with facial differences and their families.

Here are three big ways to help spread the word and inspire giving during the month of September:

Tell Your Story

  • Speak at your school, company, association, civic group, service club or place of worship. By sharing your story you are raising awareness and acceptance.
  • Tell one person each day your story and invite them to join our community on Facebook.
  • Share your story with us and we will post it on Facebook.

Support Our Work

  • Join us on Friday September 14 by wearing an AboutFace tee-shirt or blue to help raise awareness.
  • Ask your school or company to do the same.
  • The next time someone is thinking about a charity of choice for their event consider AboutFace.
